5 Easy Steps For Home Organization to Declutter Your Life

home organization

Do you ever look around your home and say “I’ve got to do something about all this stuff!” Then it’s time to declutter. So what’s the best way to get started? We asked Jennifer Bakos, Site Manager at our Apple Self-Storage Danforth location for her suggestions. Here are five of her favourite home organization tips for tackling a decluttering project.

1. Streamline Your Rooms

Things have a way of piling up, be it on the floor, in corners or shoved into a closet. Start with the floor and work your way up through the room. Only keep what you really need; donate or throw out the rest. Pick up anything on the floor and put it away. Clear unnecessary items off your countertops, tables, desks, shelves and the tops of dressers. Look at all the furniture in the room and decide if any of it can go. Make sure that anything you put away out of sight is neat and well-organized.

2. Clean Out Your Closets

Closets can easily become over packed and disorganized. Take everything out of your closet and then give your closet a good cleaning. Start putting back only the things you really want to keep. Things you haven’t worn in a while, or you no longer use, should be donated or thrown out. Jennifer suggests you can stop the hoarding with this one simple rule: “If you bring something in, something has to go out!”

3. Empty Out Your Drawers

Drawers can easily get packed full of stuff you don’t know what to do with. Take everything out of one drawer at a time, sort through it and just put back the things you really want or use. Get rid of the rest, and then move on to the next drawer.

4. Get Good Storage Bins

There are all kinds of clever storage bins, shelving and accessories designed specifically for keeping your home organized. Clear storage bins are ideal as you can stack them up and still see what’s inside. Acrylic drawer organizers are handy to pop into drawers and separate out smaller items like socks, stockings and underwear. There are also types of drawer organizers you can use for kitchen, bathroom and utility drawers to keep everything neat and visible.

5. When In Doubt, Get A Storage Unit

Even after all your hard work of organizing you may find you’ve got items you can’t bear to part with … but they take up too much space to keep at home. When that happens, you can always get a self-storage unit. Renting a storage unit can be a simple and affordable way to cut down the clutter and keep your living space neat and organized. Storage also comes in handy as a temporary solution if you’re renovating your home … or if you’re having a closet organizing system installed to make it easier than ever to keep your life clutter-free.

Just remember, don’t try to do it all at once. Decluttering can be mentally exhausting. Rather than trying to organize your entire house in one day, you’re better to do one room at a time or one section at a time, such as the kitchen cupboards or a bedroom closet.
